When should I retain an attorney to represent me in a criminal matter?

The answer to this question is as soon as is possible.  Many people wait until they have a court date scheduled before they begin thinking about retaining an attorney.  While an attorney can still provide beneficial representation at this stage and beyond, your best chance for a good result can be achieved if you engage an attorney as early in the case as is possible.  An attorney can help you with your case regarding pre-trial release decisions, interviews and communication with law enforcement authorities (and whether to engage in such discussions in the first place), presenting information to the prosecuting attorney's office prior to the time a charging decision is made (otherwise the decision is made based on information submitted by law enforcement authorities), engaging an investigator to gather information that could be helpful to your case, and negotiating your case early on.  An attorney may be able to negotiate with the prosecutor to not file a charge or to file a lesser charge than would have otherwise been the case.

Do not delay your decision to get your attorney involved in your case as early as you can.
